Dear Yuli The visit to your studio was great and the excitement continues on this side... The proposal is for you to participate in the exhibition at SESC-Pompéia with a new work that dialogues with Lina Bo Bardi’s project… That huge warehouse, a bustle of people, the little lakes, the orange brick, the noise... Among your suggestions of the hand-scorpion, the motocross bike with the appearance of corn, butter and dirty diaper (all fake obviously) and the bleeding drop, we will go ahead with the drop. Like the rest of your work, it recalls the sweetness of a bad child. The image of crystalline perfection that we normally associate with a drop falls apart, although it still preserves the idea of the beginning, of the origin of the world, of redshift. This exhibition will open on April 2 and we have enough time for you to dedicate yourself to thinking about the scale of this work. It will be an amazing bang... imagine it bleeding in that architecture! .... Kiss

The idea was that Yuli's “Gota” would be exhibited in the exhibition that we ironically called “Farsa”, but that ended up not (yet) happening. The tongue hangs and time folds every time (now) we conjugate the past, the present or the future. It looks like a game of opposites: the exhibition that now cannot be exposed, the museum that is over, the money that cannot be touched, the hugs that we will not give.

We had even chosen a specific location in the SESC-Pompeia warehouse. The “Gota” would be suspended, like a praying mantis, over a large showcase and could be seen from any corner. The showcase would be entirely made of glass and would function as a microcosm of the collective exhibition “Farsa”, hosting various of the artists’ works. It would function as a game of rhetoric, an abbreviated version of the exhibition miniaturizing the surrounding reality and giving it enchantment. It would remind of a crystal ball used to guess the future, interpreting the images that appear on the surface of the crystals.

Mid-March and borders were closed, public spaces did not reopen, and more than half of the world's population was confined to their homes (many remain in isolation).

I replied at the end of March:

Yuli, I ended up not embarking and I'm still in Lisbon. I am waiting for news about our exhibition, but everything indicates that we will have to wait. The pandemic scenario now seems to be starting in Brazil ... Hug,

June:

(Still) we don't know what to do with Gota, with the Showcase, with the Exhibition, with the Museum, with the World. Everything has changed but we are not sure what has changed. Looking at it pragmatically, we have two hypotheses: we can choose to drag our carcasses into this ancient world, populated with ideas now dead, or walk lightly with little baggage towards another world. If we follow the second hypothesis, the drop may stop being a drop and become a backpack.

This is the story of Yuli Yamagata’s drop-backpack that I wanted to tell you!

Curated by Marta Mestre and adjunct curated by Pollyanna Quintella. Saturday, June 13th, Brazil recorded 42,720 deaths from covid-19, 892 more than the previous day. With these data, Brazil is only behind the United States.?

Junho:
